Fight Off Colds the Natural Way with These Virus Killers!

While you can technically get a cold all-year-round, we are more prone to viruses during the fall and winter. That’s because the viruses behind the common cold spread more easily when the weather drops and the air becomes drier. Our nasal passages also become drier during the winter which makes us more susceptible to cold viruses but before you run to your doctor for a dose of antibiotics, try these 7 antiviral essential oils — you might already have a few in your pantry!

CINNAMON

isn’t just for sprinkling over lattés, it can also double as an effective aid against multiple virus strains including chest colds! High in phenylpropanoids, which are antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic, this essential oil can kill airborne bacteria and microbes. Simply dilute 1 drop of cinnamon leaf essential oil in 1 1/2 teaspoons of coconut oil and apply topically to cure your muscle aches and pains. Or combine it with eucalyptus and rosemary and take a few deep breathes to clear your sinuses! Just remember, if you want to ingest an essential oil, you must make sure it is specifically formulated and diluted for this purpose.

PEPPERMINT

is antispasmodic, antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant so it is an obvious choice when combatting a cold — especially if you are also dealing with a cold sore! Peppermint oil is mostly composed of menthol and menthone making it perfect for alleviating chest and throat congestion. You can also add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to any store-bought cream and massage it onto your sore, achy spots for instant relief!

GINGER

is a long-time favourite for relieving cold symptoms. Ginger essential oil is anti-inflammatory and packed with antioxidants. It is also great for treating nausea, an upset stomach, and a sore throat. You can combine grated ginger with the juice of an entire lemon for a simple but effective beverage or treat your ailments with aromatherapy and even ginger candy!

TEA TREE

oil isn’t just for your skin ailments. It contains antiseptic, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties which makes it a force to reckon against when it comes to combatting your winter cold. Not only is it perfect for treating coughs and sore throats but it is also a natural disinfectant that prevents influenza viruses from entering our cells, so you can use it to kill germs and prevent a cold from coming on in the first place! Research has found that mixing tea tree oil with thyme essential oil and eucalyptus reduced viral infectivity by more than 96 percent.

STAR ANISE

is a licorice-like aromatic oil that contains a potent antiviral substance known as shikimic acid, which the pharmaceutical industry uses to create flu drugs! If you don’t already have this essential oil in your medicine cabinet, then we recommend you get your hands on it because this is one of the most powerful antiviral remedies available. It is best diluted in coconut oil and applied to the skin to soothe aches and pains or diffused in the air to kill virus-causing germs.

LEMONGRASS

Also known as Melissa essential oil, lemongrass is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory with analgesic properties, so it is perfect for alleviating pain thanks to its analgesic properties. Diffuse it or add it to your bath at the first sign of a cold to stop it in its tracks. Lemongrass is also known to help soothe stomachaches and headaches, which makes it a triple threat! One study found that the scent of lemon oil can elevate a person’s mood which is perfect if your cold has you laying in bed all day. Light a lemon-scented candle or try some aromatherapy to lift your spirits.

LAVENDER

We saved the best for last! Lavender essential oil has a ridiculously long list of proven benefits. Not only is it a sedative, but it's antispasmodic, anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antibacterial, anesthetic, anticarcinogenic (it can counteract the effects of cancer-causing chemicals), immune-boosting, and antiviral. Are you tired of feeling congested and battling a cough? Inhale lavender to loosen up phlegm and alleviate breathing issues.
