What Happens When Your Lymphatic System Stops Working?

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. It consists of:

  • lymphatic vessels, which are similar to the circulatory system's veins and capillaries.

  • The vessels are connected to lymph nodes, where the lymph is filtered. These nodes, there are approximately 600 of them, are where white blood cells fight infection.

  • Your tonsils, adenoids, and spleen are also part of the lymphatic system as well as your bone marrow and thymus — which produce the cells in the lymph.

THE FUNCTIONS OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The lymphatic system has three main functions. The first is to maintain the balance of fluid between your blood and tissues. This is known as fluid homeostasis and it's very important in maintaining your overall health. Too much fluid can lead to lymphedema — excess fluid in the skin and tissues. Other lymphatic system problems can include dehydration, infections, blockage, and cancer.

Your lymphatic system is connected to your body's overall immune system. Its second function is to help defend against bacteria and other intruders by producing white blood cells. But if your lymphatic system shuts down, your immune system weakens meaning you are more susceptible to “opportunistic infections” — sicknesses that can even come from things that ordinarily wouldn’t harm you. These can include recurrent pneumonia, herpes simplex and tuberculosis among other infections.

The last main function of the lymphatic system is to facilitate the absorption of fats and fat-soluble nutrients in the digestive system. Most of the fats absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract are taken up by part of the gut membrane in the small intestine. The lymphatic system has tiny lacteals or capillaries that absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins to form a milky white fluid called chyle. This fluid delivers nutrients throughout your body.

Our bodies consist of a number of biological systems that carry out an array of necessary, every-day functions. Unfortunately, the lymphatic system is often overlooked. If you feel tired and congested or notice unusual swelling in your face and body, your lymphatic system might not be draining or function properly. While your diet and physical activity level play a huge part in ensuring everything is working properly, the Löschn Method is a powerful, proprietary form of lymphatic drainage. Our trained team of therapists utilize natural and non-invasive methods that are proven to re-establish your body’s lymphatic flow that has been blocked or trapped.
