5 Ways to Naturally Soothe All Types of Rosacea

Rosacea affects more than three million Canadians and almost 415 million people worldwide. However, according to the National Rosacea Society, 95 percent of patients didn't know the signs and symptoms of rosacea prior to their diagnosis. While this skin disorder primarily affects people over the age of 30, it is being seen on more and more people in their twenties and early teens. If left untreated it can cause significant psychological, social, and occupational problems.


Although rosacea is such a common disorder it is poorly understood. Perhaps it’s because most people equate it to a red, “flushed” face even though the symptoms go far beyond a rosy complexion. There are so many signs and symptoms that rosacea has actually been broken down into four subtypes:

  1. Ocular rosacea: eyes are red and irritated, eyelids may be swollen, and there may be what appears to be a sty on the eyelid

  2. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels

  3. Papulopustular rosacea: redness, swelling, acne-like breakouts, and overly oily skin, large and visibly inflamed pores

  4. Phymatous rosacea: patches of thickening skin (most common around the nose but can appear on the chin, forehead, cheeks, and ears), fluid retention and swelling, itchy and scaly skin, and redness

The redness can spread to your forehead, back, chest, ears, and even eyelids, and over time, may become permanent. Since the skin is extremely sensitive, many things can cause rosacea to flare up. Spending too much time in the sun, skincare products, hairspray, heat, stress, spicy foods, and alcohol can all trigger rosacea but exact causes differ from person to person.



Regardless of which subtype of rosacea you have, these are five effect treatments to help reduce and calm your flare-ups.

  1. Clean up your diet: Because rosacea is caused by inflammation, it is important to clean your gut with foods that are high in fibre, low in sugar, and rich in hydrogenated oils. Introducing more vegetables, oatmeal, turmeric, and ginger into your diet can help your gut regulate inflammation. Lavender, green tea, and chamomile can also reduce inflammation and soothe the skin.

  2. Use more aloe vera: The gel from the inner leaf of the aloe vera plant is packed full of healing properties, which is why it’s used in treating sunburn. You can apply aloe vera directly to your skin or drink it! Mixing aloe vera into your water is a great way to add more antioxidants and vitamins to your diet.   3. Stop being scared of oils: a lot of people avoid using oils in their skincare routine because they assume it causes breakouts. But if you have rosacea, you should definitely avoid gel cleansers, acidic exfoliating cleansers, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in favour of cleansing oils. Rose-hip seed oil, seabuckthorn oil, tamanu oil, and evening primrose are full of nutrients and anti-inflammatories.

  4. Change your pillowcase often: while you sleep, your dead skin cells, dirt, and oil are accumulating on your pillowcase. This can lead to clogged pores and rosacea.
