How to Naturally Protect Your Skin From Blue Light

While the effects that blue light have on our skin needs more research, early evidence seems to suggest they have the potential to be damaging. But what exactly is blue light? and what does it do to our faces?

Blue light, also referred to as High Energy Visible light, is a high-energy, short-wavelength light which is primarily emitted from the sun. We also receive a significant dose of HEV from our computer and phone screens as well as indoor lighting. Although HEV has positive health benefits — regulating our natural sleep-wake cycle, elevating our mood, and helping with memory and cognitive function — studies show the effects it has on our skin might actually be harmful.

In 2010, a small, peer-reviewed published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found a connection between blue light exposure from the sun and pigmentation, redness, and swelling in darker skin tones. Five years later, another small study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, suggested blue light exposure might stimulate the production of free radicals in the skin, which is known to accelerate the appearance of aging.

“There’s also evidence that as blue light penetrates the skin it generates reactive oxygen species, which leads to DNA damage, thereby causing inflammation and the breakdown of healthy collagen and elastin, as well as hyper-pigmentation,” Shari Marchbein told Macaela Mackenzie in an interview for Allure

In a world where we have to worry about text neck and cellphone elbow, do we really need to add “screen face” to the list? Seems so and it’s not just because of blue light. Spending long hours in front a screen, especially if you are looking down or frowning, leads to deep set wrinkles around the forehead and eyes and sagging underneath the chin. Bad posture and sitting in the same position for extended hours impacts our lymphatic system’s natural drainage. This causes our bodies to swell and retain excess fluid, which is often mistaken for fat. So how do you combat all of this without breaking the bank?

Skincare specialists are still split down the middle about whether or not we have to worry about the blue lights from our phones as much as HEV emitted by the sun. The beauty industry however, has already made up it’s mind. There is a whole world of skincare products dedicated to protecting your skin from blue light. From antioxidant serums to sunscreen infused with red algae and even mineral makeup formulated with iron oxide, all of these promise to help neutralize and repair the damage done by these wavelengths of light. But with so much more research needed to determine whether or not HEV is truly a risk, how can we trust these products?

At Löschn Facial Bar in Calgary, our mission is to offer an alternative to anti-aging and skin rejuvenating treatments and products that is effective with proven results. By agitating the skin and muscles with a medical grade stainless steel tool, our team of highly trained Löschn therapists guide away excess fluid and stimulate your body’s natural lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes which help filter and drain your body of toxins and waste. If there is a clog, the lymph flow becomes stagnant and congested. This leads to a wide variety of health issues such as:

  • Weakened immune system

  • Fatigue

  • Bloating

  • Water retention

  • Stiff joints

  • Itchy and dry skin

  • Cellulite

  • Chronic sinusitis, sore throats, colds, and ear issues

  • Swollen glands

  • Bad circulation

Additionally, the Löschn method allows us to easily locate and break down scar tissue formed from past injuries; define your cheekbones, chin, and jawline; soften fine lines and rejuvenate dull skin, tone and strengthen your facial muscles, and restore collagen bonds. Natural body sculpting treatments are also available at both Löschn Facial Bars in Calgary.
